Texas State Memorial State Monuments - Confederate
The Texas State Memorial is located on the south loop of Confederate Avenue at the Railroad Redoubt, tour stop 13, milepost 13.5 of the (Vicksburg National Military Park )park tour road. It was constructed of Texas red granite and erected at a cost of $100,000. The memorial was dedicated on November 4, 1961, and completed during the winter of 1962-63.
The eleven steps leading to the main portion of the memorial honor
Texas' sister states in the Confederacy. A live yucca plant, native to Texas
and the southwestern United States is a unique addition to the monument.
The bronze statuary symbolizes all who served from Texas at Vicksburg and
captures the spirit of the men who sealed the breach in the Confederate
lines. The sculptor was Herring Coe. Lundgren and Maurer were the architects
and the Texas Granite Corporation was the contractor. The memorial list
all Texas units on the defense line, in Johnston's Army and in Walker's
Texas Division.
Waul's Texas Legion Cavalry Battalion was not at Vicksburg as this unit was then attached to Col. Robert McCulloch's 1st Brigade of Brig. Gen. James R. Chalmers' 5th Military District headquartered at Panola, MS, Gen. Joseph E. Johnston's Department of the West and was commanded by Col. Leonidas Willis.

Waul's Texas Legion
Troops in the Defense of Vicksburg - Confederate
Monument located on Confederate Avenue south of the Texas Memorial (Park Tour Stop #13). The monument for Waul's Texas Legion was constructed at a cost of $300 of which $200 was contributed by Pvt. Henry E. Losey, Company A, 77th Illinois Infantry (Major, U.S.C.T.).
The Legion, with the exception of the cavalry battalion listed above, was attached to Maj. Gen. Carter L. Stevenson's Division, Lt. Gen. John C. Pemberton's Army of Vicksburg, and was commanded by Col. Thomas N. Waul, who raised and equipped it and consisted of the following units:
1st Battalion Infantry Commanded by Maj. Eugene S. Bolling. 2nd Battalion Infantry
Commanded by Lt. Col. James Wrigley.
Artillery Company Commanded by Capt. J. Q. Wall.
Cavalry Detachment Commanded by Lt. Thomas J. Cleveland.
