Item 37 [Transcription : History of Bowen- Green families 1793-1928 ]
This history,contributed to the Bowen family Web by JoAnn Osborn of Michigan, USA was written by Addison Theodarus Green in approx. 1928. Mrs Osborn received this from from an unknown contributor, who himself had recieved it from an unknown and unnamed contributor.

Item 38 [ Mack Bowen of Wichita County,Texas c 1865 ]
This story, garnered from the collection at the American Memories collection, library of Congress is from from the Wichita Daily Times, Sept. 18, 1938.And tells the story as recounted by Mrs. Quisenberry of the years around from ca.1861-1865 "at the close of the civil war". In the story Mrs. Quisenberry tells of the Death of Mack Bowen at the hands of the local native Indians.And refers to the general conditions of the day.

"In the spring of 1855, my father, W. M. Dickson was a home guard at Kerrville. Old Bill Bowen was a home guard in Atascosa County. The Indians came, to steal whatever they could get away with. They got two women, a boy, and many horses. Bill Bowen and his men set out after the Indians"....

Newspaper Article fromMay 18, 1878 telling of the hanging of Brown Bowen :
Brown Bowen was hung in Texas, his involvement with the Infamous gunslinger John Wesley Hardin led to the day when he was hung for the murder of Thomas Holderman.
Brown was the cousin of Jane Bowen. Jane married John Wesley Hardin in 1873 in Dewitt County, Texas and stuck with him till the end. Take a glimpse through this portal to the past.

John Wesley Hardin biography .One of the most prolific killers of his day, John Wesley Hardin was Ill tempered,bad mannered and just plain mean.One of the famous tales is that "he once killed a man for snorin'" John Corder ,a living descendent of John Wesley wrote me, "JWH wasn't too well thought of according to my mom..her grandmother would only rarely speak of JWH, but she left many letters etc. to my grandfather Elmer Spellmann who in turn ..."

This is a partial listing of the index of the Hardin letters That Mr. Corder referred to.There are many references to Bowen's in the index. I am planning in the summer of 1999 to visit the library and hopefully discover some treasures.
