*** From Betsy Young March 16 , 2002

Good Morning Ben,

An obituary was found at the Yoakum library for a John M. SUSTON born 8/14/1818; died 6/1908 at the home of William Rice, and buried at Alexander.  ...Anita she said it sure sounds like John M. RUSTON, the 2nd husband of Amanda Garey.  I haven't actually seen the obit - Barbara York called me from the library.  I'll pick up a copy on my next trip there.  Any idea where Amanda might be buried?

Adeline's Grandfather was Seymour Garey

.... I did find Truman Courtney on the 1840 Courtland County, New York census as 1 male and 2 females. This would be Truman, Amanda Garey and Adeline (born 1839). In 1850, they are listed in Willet, Courtland County, NY with children: Adeline 11, Charles 9, Seamore 7, Emaline 5, Wm 4, Orvis 2 and Harriette 7/12. NO MARY!!! Mary was 8 in 1850 so she would have been at home. She is not listed with either Truman's parents or Amanda's parents in 1850 either.

I have Mary's birth year and place, 1842, Illinois, from the 1860 Karnes County census. The rest is from Earlene Rumsey. I have contacted her daughter, Jan Bolte who is now in St. Louis. She has her mother's research books. When we go through there, I'll stop for a visit. She said she would look to see if there's any other references.

Kraig has sent me copies of probably most or all the letters he received from Truman Courtney. The only reference I found was a note on the side margin of one that said "Harriet, sister to Adeline, married Chisholm." I am beginning to believe that someone along the line just mistakenly assumed that Mary Hodges was Adeline's sister. I'm going on the assumption that she wasn't until I find proof. If any of you have anything else on Mary that married Daniel Hodges,I sure would appreciate knowing about it. Thanks!

Anita ( Cooper )
