The Muster rolls of the 48th Illinois volunteer infantry states that Green Bowen(1) b abt 1837 and Andrew Bowen b abt. 1828 sons of Joshua Bowen Jr. and Petney Gann were both born in Tennessee. My name is Sue Bowen and my husband and I have been working on his branch of the Bowens for many years with limited success; they seem to have been a pretty elusive bunch. I am contacting you because your website indicated that some of your Bowens were from Cannon County, TN. I will give you a brief summary ofmy husband's family:

Absalom Bowen born about 1785 in North Carolina. He shows up in Lincoln County, TN in the 1820 census, Rutherford County, TN in 1830, Cannon County, TN in 1840/1850/1860. We think he probably died between 1860-1870. In these same censuses, there were four recurring names (William, Thomas, Charles, and Abner) in the same locations as Absalom; possibly brothers?

or other males relatives?

Absalom's son John was my husband's great, great grandfather. He married and lived in Cannon County as well. He was in the 18th Tennessee Infantry (company H) during the Civil War, was captured at Chickamauga, and died in 1863 at the Rock Island Prison Barracks, Illinois.

John's youngest son, Absalom Steve Bowen, lived in Cannon County, presumably until his mother died or remarried (she and the children are in the 1870 Census, but there is no trace of her in subsequent censuses). Steve later lived in Rutherford and Davidson Counties. Steve's youngest son, William Alfred Bowen Sr, was born in Cannon County and later lived in Rutherford County. His oldest child, William Alfred Bowen Jr, was my husband's father.

We are hoping you have more detailed information about the Bowens in Cannon County. We would really like to know more about Absalom, John, and Steve, but they were very low profile individuals. It is difficult with Absalom since the early censuses had so little detailed information. We would really like to find who his parents were and where in North Carolina they came from.

Any information you have would be greatly appreciated.

I wonder if you are related to the same Bowens as I am. I can trace back to my ggggrandfather, Abaslum Bowen, about 1784-1874, gggf John Bowen, who died as a POW at the Union prison at Rock Island, IL. on 17 Dec 1863. His son, my gggf was named James Richard, Born 5 Mar, 1852 @ Readyville, TN. & Died 26 Apr,1934. James Richard was married, I think, five times, and had children by four different wives. My gf, john Stevenson stayed in Cannon Co. but I know some of his 1/2 and maybe full siblings went West and some settled around Oklahoma City, OK and Lubbock, TX. I remember hearing ,when I was young that they went by covered wagon, and I,think, some went all the way to California. My Bowens all came from the Readyville area of present day Cannon Co., which was originally part of Rutherford Co.

If this interests you e-mail me back and I'll call you or I'll give you my #. I am 66 and retired.

From: Will Smith

Hello, I've run across some previously unknown Smiths buried in the Choate Cemetery in Putnam County, TN near Cookeville that seem to be connected to our Bowen's.

I descend from John Bowen through Agnes (Bowen) McFerrin-Buchanan, who married 1st John McFerrin, and 2nd Archibald Buchanan. Their daughter Martha Buchanan married about 1778 in Augusta County, VA to Andrew STEELE, and they are my maternal grandmother's direct ancestors.  Agnes was a sister to William Bowen of Sumner County, TN, who's house still stands at Moss-Wright Park in Goodlettsville.

I've run across a William Smith buried at Choate who's a descendant of a George W. Smith who married a Rebecca Bowen born about 1768 in Augusta County, VA. The name "Reece Bowen Smith" pops up in this family. I'm wondering if perhaps this Rebecca was a daughter of Reece Bowen who died at King's Mountain 7 October 1780?

 Thanks,

Will Smith of Hillsboro, TN.
