Labor Day was spent at
the cabin. Jack had cut some trees, so Paul, Tara,
Valorie, Deane and I spent the day splitting and
stacking the wood. Fort Jackson now has a happy
woodshed.
Bob's "Dragon Tree" keeps
watch over the road leading to the cabin.
Paul, Tara and Deane
return from exploring the river and forest.
While exploring, Mollie
gets her nose right into the duff.
Some pretty leaves in the
forest sunlight...
Tara pauses to weave
grass into Paul's beard.

Close-up of the work in
progress...

Paul poses with the
finished masterpiece.

The group enjoys the warm
sun, telling stories of times past.
September 21 was
beautiful and sunny. Valorie, mom and I visited the
cabin. It was perfect weather for sitting outside,
enjoying the butterflies, mountain air, and warm
gentle breezes.
Across the river from the
cabin, a single-engine airplane takes off from the
emergency airfield.
Valorie tries to get one
of the butterflies to land on her arm. She was not
successful.
The weekend of September
28, Valorie, Angel and I drove to Ocean Shores.
Valorie and I attended her 31st Issaquah High School
class reunion. We stayed at the Silver King Motel,
near Damon Point in Grays Harbour.
Our motel was adjacent to
the Quinault Harbor. There is a boardwalk, with
moorage for fishing boats and a ferry to
Westport.
The passenger ferry only
operates on weekends after Labor Day. Here the boat
is leaving the harbor headed for Westport.
After the ferry leaves, a
gull watches over the harbor.
The Damon Point area has
a wonderful hiking trail, with informative markers
telling of the culture and history of the
area.
Along the trail are areas
with vividly-colored ground cover.
On the beach, Valorie
takes in the view of the ocean from a driftwood
bench.
We spotted a graffiti
driftwood log.
Along the way we visited
the remains of the S. S. Catala. Not much left of
this shipwreck now.
A trail marker tells of
the numerous shipwrecks in the area. Of the Catala,
the sign noted: "During powerful 75-100 mile an hour
winds and high tides the S.S. Catala capsized and
became grounded near noon on New Years Day, 1965 on
the southern tip of Ocean Shores."
A nice picture of the
ocean.
We found a driftwood hut
on the beach. Valorie, Angel and the dogs tried out
the hut's bench.
On Saturday night,
Valorie and I attended the class reunion banquet at
the Shilo Inn. The banquet was nicely decorated, and
included this banner.
The class members
gathered in the hotel lobby. Here Valorie talks with
several classmates.
Valorie, Ellen and Aune
pose for a picture.
Janice tries very hard to
understand what Valorie is trying to explain. Was it
the theory of general relativity?
After a wonderful
banquet, the class gathered on the beach for a
bonfire.
As we left on Sunday, I
got one more picture of our tracks on the beach.
Mollie and Rhys had such a good time!
