The first day in March
dawned sunny! After washing our vehicles and changing
oil, I decided to prune the apple tree. Here is the
BEFORE view....
...and here is the after
view.
Ted invited us to take a
look at his newest project, cleaning Springfield
rifle barrels. Here is his work space, where he
checks the barrels for warpage and cleans
them.
Here is a stack of
barrels awaiting processing.
Valorie inspects some of
the barrels that have been sorted by manufacturing
year. Some of the completed and processed barrels are
now available on eBay.

Hayden, at work!

Kaylie just loves
Madison...

Kayden appears to be
amused as Debra imitages a monkey-like scream.

tries to control the active Kayden.

Valorie and Anne enjoy
the sun and a Mariner's practice game. The lady next
to them was from Maple Valley!

On the way to Winslow
there was several feet of snow. And, with several
feet in the snow, were Anne and Debra.

If you want to visit an
interesting place, take a trip to the Tonto Natural
Bridge, north of Payson Arizona.
Here is a map of the
Tonto Natural Bridge State Park. There are several
viewpoints from above, but much better views from
below.
On the trail down to the
natural bridge was this beautiful cactus.
The wooden bridge allows
the visitors to get a good view of the Natural
Bridge, the world's largest natural travertine
bridge.
Valorie and Anne also
came across this group of Javelina, the only pigs
native to the Americas. Here they are searching for
insects and worms in the lawn.

Reflections on a day in
March.
My tulips are in
full-bloom by mid-March.
Rhys stands in the midst
of the rhubarb which is rapidly beginning to
grow.
On St. Patrick's Day,
Rhys watches the birds as they eat their fill from
the feeders outside our front window.
On Saturday, Paul came
over and planted six hop rhizomes. Once the shoots
emerge, Bob will encourage their upward growth by
training the shoot to grow clockwise around the
string supports.
We took a trip to the
Small Farm Exposition which was being held on the
Enumclaw Fairgrounds.
Tara participated in the
show at this display for the Center for Urban
Horticulture. Here Paul was holding down the fort
while Tara was visiting other displays at the
show.
In the animal barn, we
found this large (and friendly) pig snoozing with its
head poking under the stall door. Shortly after this
picture was taken, Valorie fed it a candy sucker,
stick and all!
Opposite the friendly
pig, and mounted on the wall, was this game of "pin
the tail on the piggie".
Valorie also stopped to
talk to some of the people who had brought their
rabbits to the show.
The kids had a lot of fun
participating in a game of chicken races. They used
balloons to prod the birds from one end of the table
to the other.
