Mike Nelson turns 50 and throws a birthday party at Cavanaughs on 5th Avenue in Seattle, Paul celebrates his 23 birthday at the Calcutta Grill, Fourth of July, Scott and Kayrena visit, the Betts visit from Arizona...

Birthday Banner While looking at the Birthday banner for Mike Nelson, someone was heard to say, "Just what is it that Mike is still doing after all these years?" Tables are decorated for Mike Nelsons birthday party Colleen and her friends provided each table with birthday toys, hats, and masks of Mike.
Singing a tribute to Mike The lead singer of the jazz band sings a tribute to Mike Nelson at his 50th birthday anniversary party. Cabin worker dresses as exotic dancer The exotic dancer gets carried away in the joy of partying. Seriously, though, it took a brave soul to dress as an exotic dancer with a hairy body like this. He collected the written tributes for Mike Nelson.
Colleen and the exotic dancer Colleen gives directions to the exotic dancer for collecting the tributes to Mike. Either that, or she was showing him the way to the exit! Lola enjoys herself at the party Lola appears to be enjoying herself. Doesn't she look great in her birthday hat?
Valorie and Ted are dancing Valorie and Ted take to the dance floor. This picture was taken just before Ted cleared the floor and gave a demonstration of his "break dancing" routine. Valorie wears a party hat and plastic glasses with a plastic nose Making an appearance only once was Valorie's cousin from Hawaii. She recently had plastic surgery on her nose.
Valorie holds at mask of Mike Nelson There were many Mike Nelson "look-alikes" at the party. Here is one we identified as Mike Valson. Lola with Mike Nelson mask Another fake. We discovered she was Mike Lolason.
Bob with plastic glasses and a party hat Bob, just like Valorie, was surprised to discover a cousin from Hawaii. He, too, had just had plastic surgery on his nose. Paul works on his coloring project For Paul's 23 birthday, we enjoyed dinner at the Calcutta Grille. Paul passed the time by working on his coloring project.
Paul displays his coloring job After anxious moments trying to finish the word search puzzle, Paul proudly displays his finished project. Nickki ordering her dinner Nickki had difficulty pronouncing some of the names from the dinner menu. This apparently is the method she chose for ordering her dinner.
Kaylie at the Calcutta Grill Thomas tried to indicate how old Kaylie was acting while we were waiting for the dinner to be served. Some of us thought that Thomas, too, was acting younger than his real age. Nickki posts a sign at her dinner place Some of the dinner guests thought Nickki's jokes were hilarious. Others felt they were not appropriate for young ears. Nickki made a sign to let us know what she thought.
Paul blows out his birthday candle At the conclusion to dinner, Paul huffs and puffs and blows the candle out! Everyone at the restaurant clapped and cheered! Nickki Austin and Debra Standing outside of the Calcutta Grille, Nickki, Debra and Anne pose for a picture. Debra goosed Austin, otherwise why would he have such a funny grin?
Paul Thomas and Anne I wonder what the wind chill is when there is a 20 mile-per-hour wind and the air is in the mid-50's? Do you think Anne thought it was cold? Dad making a toast at july 4th picnic For July 4th, Ron organized a barbecue dinner. Here dad is testifying that Ron made a good choice in wines to go with dinner.
Ron, Carrie and Valorie One of the games we played at the barbecue was to see how long everyone could go without cracking a smile. Every so often it was required of the contestants to take another sip of wine and make crazy faces. The photographer missed the "making crazy faces" part. Thomas and Paul compare height Dad uses a large carving knife to compare the height between Thomas and Paul. Was he planning to cut one down to size?
Fireworks The highlight of the fireworks was the sherman tank salute to the fourth. Or, was the highlight when the neighbor came over for the third time to complain about flaming fireworks landing in his front yard? Maybe we should ask Nickki and Debra who were our official safety monitors for the evening. Thomas standing by produce boxes in Yakima Washington The fruit growers in Yakima Washington ship fruit to all corners of the world. Occasionally the fruit growers need someone to help hold up their shipping containers. I guess Thomas was feeling frisky.
Valorie and Paul at Tucker Cellers Winery Valorie uses the crude outdoor facilities at the Tucker Celler Winery. It was the first winery we visited in our Yakima Valley winery tour. Paul straightens out his back on a bench at Tucker Cellers Thomas and Paul were considering an alternate means of transportation. Paul wanted to rest between winery visits, but Thomas, after several unsuccessful attempts at driving, decided that the automobile was a better choice.
Talking with the winemaker at Yakima River Winery We enjoyed our visit with the wine maker at the Yakima River Winery. Doing the tour on a week day has the advantage of no crowds, but there are usually no tours available either. Bonair Winery The Bonair winery has good wine and a wonderful picnic area including a pond with fake ducks. The gold fish, however, are real. The photographer took great pains to take a picture without including the pond, the duck decoys, the fish or the picnic area.
Wine aging in barrels at Washington Cellers Winery A winery tour would be incomplete without a picture of the aging barrels. I'll bet you can't spot Bob hiding among the barrels in this picture! The vinyard at Staton Hills Winery Staton Hills Winery was the last winery on our whirlwind tour of the wine country. They had some of the nicest displays of wine and an impressive wine tasting room. We were not impressed, however, with their selection of wines. The photographer was somewhat impressed with their vinyard, however.
Teapot gas station in Zillah A must-see is the teapot gas station in Zillah, Washington. It is a national monument. We were amazed that is a functioning gas station! Click here to learn more about the Teapot Gas Station Scott, Kayrena and Austin Scott and Kayrena were able to visit us. They flew to Spokane, rented a car and drove five hours for a weekend visit. We're not sure if the travel agent who sent them to the Spokane airport is still in business. We thought that SeaTac (less than an hour away) would have been a closer airport.
Scott holding Austin Scott wanted us to check to see whether his right eyeball was still in place. Apparently Austin didn't care. Scott shows Austin his tongue Having confirmed that there was nothing wrong with his right eye, Scott let Austin verify that his tongue and braces were in their proper places as well.
Kayrena holding Austin Kayrena enjoyed holding Austin on an almost perfect Saturday afternoon. Here you can see Kayrena checking to see if Austin has fingers suited for playing the piano. Scott poses with rhubarb ears After checking his eyes and tongue, the last check was his ears. Fortunate for him, he was able to remove the growing rhubarb leaves before they did permanent damage.
Kaylie with watering can Kaylie spent the afternoon with Scott and Kayrena by impressing them with her gardening expertise. Here she demonstrates the proper method for using a watering can to water the foliage under the douglas fir trees. Angel and Lola visiting Angel and Roberts house in Malo Washington Lola stands next to Angel at her home near Malo, Washington. Everyone was unaware that Angel was one of the original settlers in the area. Rumor has it that she single-handedly built the cabin and captured and trained wild horses.
Christian tends the horses This cowboy is known as Christian of the White Hats. The white hat signifies that he has the courage to tame wild horses. Here he demonstrates his courage as he stands near one of the feared beasts. Kim holds Brittney for the first time It was shortly after noon when Kim finally was able to hold her newest grand-daughter, Brittney. Since Brittney was not wearing her hat, we weren't sure if she was known as Brittney of the White Hats.
Alissa and Andy make faces at the cabin One symptom of altitude sickness is the inability to open one's eyes. Both Alissa and Andy proved to the photographer that they were not affected by the altitude at the cabin. Andy stands in the doorway to the kitchen at the cabin Andy appeared in the doorway of the kitchen at the cabin and gave a hearty, "Ho Ho Ho!" He announced his discovery that a belt could be used to hold up one's pants, rather than having to hold them with both hands.
Emily at the cabin Emily did not appear to be affected by the altitude. She did, however, think it was funny that Andy was suggesting that a piece of cowhide could be used to hold up one's pants. She insists that staples work much better. Kim holds Brittney In our first annual "Head Size" contest, Kimbery was the first place winner. Brittney came in last, but was heard to vow that she was going to work hard all this coming year to increase her head size for next years contest.
Alissa, Christian and Emily "Christian the White Hat" managed to catch this fearsome forest beast with the help of Alissa, who used her yellow "beast lure" flower to coax the beast from the forest. Surprisingly, Emily was also attracted to the yellow "beast lure" flower. Emily in a sea of wildflowers Emily shows her courage as she holds a forest beast while sitting in a field of yellow "beast lure" flowers.
Rick and Kim stand on the porch at the cabin Neither Rick nor Kim were willing to venture from the porch of the cabin when the fearsome forest beasts were on the prowl. Sarah enjoying the scenery at the cabin Sarah took her turn at guard duty in the search for more fearsome forest beasts. She was upset when she learned that fearsome forest beasts do not venture forth unless they are enticed with yellow "beast lure" flowers.
