We started off July with
a visit to the wine country in Washington state. Nice
weather, a nice car, and no crowds made it a
wonderful trip.
At Bonair winery, Valorie
takes advantage of the lawn sprinkler. Or, did the
sprinkler take advantage of her?
At Eaton Hill winery,
Valorie, Debra and Anne were fascinated by this
enormous tree. Was this the long sought-after tree of
life?
Even Bob had to
investigate this interesting tree, which had branches
loaded with red and black berries.
A close-up photo of this
berry tree reveals that it is only a mulberry tree.
Maybe it was a tree of life in disguise.
Although Anne insisted
that the wine tasting did not affect her, this photo
tells a different story.
Just before lunch, Anne
helps roll a wine barrel into the winery.
From the wine cellar
prison, we were able to witness the activity above
ground.
Exhausted from the tour,
Bob, Thomas and Valorie dream of their
experiences.
On Paul's birthday, we
watched as he takes his turn at bat as they played on
a field near Green Lake. His team won.
The sun sets over Green
Lake in Seattle.
Rhys and Mollie had an
exciting evening when Thomas brought a "monster dog"
(Kali) to visit.
On Saturday, July 21,
Paul and Joan Herrick hosted a barbecue at their home
in Seattle. Here Joan takes Thomas, Paul Genung,
Valorie and Bob on a tour of her wonderful flower
garden. Paul Genung had to be restrained from picking
one of the flowering lillies.
Either Randy Russell was
caught in a thoughtful moment, was leading a silent
prayer, or was wondering where all the wine went. It
appears Bill Shaffer was checking to see whether
Janet was peeking.
As Paul Herrick explains
a complex theory of logic, Paul Genung interprets for
Craig Rhyne. Joan, seeing that the discussion is
leading nowhere, simply enjoys her cheesecake and
raspberries.
After a wonderful
barbecue, Dick Patten provided cigars to go with the
Yakima Valley Port. Both Craig and Steve use a common
flame to ignite their smokes.
Dick, Craig and Steve
enjoy the first puffs of their cigars.
Our gracious hosts, Paul
and Joan. It was a wonderful evening of stories and
song.
Although the weather was
not ideal, we visited the Scottish games at the King
County fairgrounds in Enumclaw.
One of our first stops
was to visit the Scottish horses. Here Ted and
Valorie admire a horse big enough to give a ride to
an entire family!
One of the main
attractions is the competition between Pipe and Drum
bands. Here one band leaves the judging area. By the
way, can you spot Ted and Valorie?
One of the Piping bands
marches towards the judging area.
One of the major
attractions is the massing of the pipes and drum
bands. Here they march towards the crowd as the drums
pound and the pipes sing.
As the bands play the
leaders perform. Here it appears that they are
playing the game, "Simon Says"!--"Simon says, lift
your right leg and hold the baton above your
head..."
Each performer is dressed
in elegant clothing. Here one of the favorites of the
crowd stands at attention.
As the ceremony ends, the
band plays as they snake their way to the
exit.
As we wandered through
the crowd, we came upon this wonderful reminder of a
Scottish proverb.
