Cyrus Barrett and Susannah Zettelmeyer

There is some specualtion that Frederick BARRETT and Christina BRAUN are Cyrus's parents, but I have found no proof of that. Another researcher thinks that Cyrus's father is Abraham, but I could find absolutely nothing to confirm or deny that. If you have any knowledge of who his parents are, please email me. It has been my brick wall for years and I'm tired of bumping my head on that wall.

Another person who is not-so-distantly related to us thinks that Cyrus' father's name was Abraham. I have found no proof of that either.

Here is why I don't think either of them are Cyrus' father. In those days, up until about mid 1800s, there were a few naming patterns that many families used. In most of those naming patterns, usually the first male child was named after the paternal grandfather. In our family, Cyrus I named his firstborn son Daniel. Elias only had one son and he is unnamed, so we can't be sure what that child would have been named. So, providing the family used one of the prevalent patterns, and either Abraham or Frederick were his father his firstborn son would have one of those names. To go further on this, there is not a Frederick or an Abraham in any of Cyrus or Elias's family, in any generation.

Cyrus BARRETT

Cyrus was born in 1797 either at Seneca Falls, Seneca Co, NY or in Elizabethtown, Lancaster Co, PA. He married Susannah SETTLEMAYOR from PA and had three children. With his family, Cyrus returned to NY, probably to Seneca Co. Here Cyrus and Susannah had three more children. The family then migrated to Ohio sometime between 1837 and 1840, when his youngest child, William H was born. Cyrus was the first settler of Madison Twp, Williams Co, OH. Here in Northwestern Ohio, Cyrus played a large role in this new twp. Cyrus and Susannah's headstone He, as well as his oldest son Cyrus, and Elias (probably brother to the elder Cyrus) were some of the first elected officers of Madison Twp. in 1843. In 1858 both Cyrus and Susannah passed away and were buried in the BARRETT Cemetery which Cyrus had purchased in the 1830's.

Cyrus and Susannah's children were baptized at Smoke Church, which is now called St. Paul's Church in Windsor, Greenwich Twp, Berks County, PA. Susannah Zettelmeyer was confirmed at Smoke Church on 18 April 1813. Smoke Church records also show that Cyrus Barret was received into membership and received his first communion from Dr. Freidh. Miller, Pastor, on the 22 of March 1818. mother headstone 1 The baptismal records of children of Cyrus and Susannah can be found at St. Paul's (Smoke) Church in Windsor Twp, Berks Co, PA. The 1850 Census for Mill Creek, Madison Twp, Williams Co, Ohio shows that they first moved from Pennsylvania to New York before moving onto Ohio. There is a Syrius Barrett in Seneca Falls, Seneca County, NY, in 1830. His children are of the correct ages, so I believe this to be our Cyrus and Susannah. It seems they moved between Berks Co, PA and Seneca Co, NY a few times.

mother headstone 02 The Ohio Genealogical Society published a book of Ohio Cemeteries. The Barrett Cemetery in Kunkle Ohio is listed. Among those buried there are Cyrus and Susannah, as well as their son Elijah. On the new headstone there is also the words "Mother of C." There is also a small stone that says "Mother of C" on it. I believe that Cyrus' mother made the trip with them to Ohio and these are her headstones. They moved to Ohio between 1837 when Elijah was born and 1840 when William Henry was born. To the right is the headstone that says Father and it is next to the large headstone with Cyrus and Susannahs names on it. I am not positive if this is for Cyrus or if it is for his father. Any information you may have on it would be greatly appreciated.
