| Most of those from South Uist, in the Hebrides, were crofters or cottars, in the area of Kilpheder and Lochboisdale, whereas the Aberdeenshire side were mostly fisher folk or in marine merchant services, around Peterhead and Whinnyfold (pronounced 'finny-faal'), on the Scottish north-east coastline. The Argyll lines were also shepherds, and Maggie Reid came from dairy farming folk. The Irish records, however, are almost non-existent, making researching of the Reids very difficult. |
