When I got back I expected to find a stack of Walrath letters, but I guess everyone was on vacation too. promise to get busy now that vacation is over. Please may I hear from you with lots of information you have gathered, so that I can make a more useful letter next time? Our vice-president, Betty Cathey has been on the sick list this past winter, but she is better now, and says she will start digging again. She is very good at this, and many of the records I have she has sent me. Some of the people whose names are on our lists have expressed interest in our association, but have not sent in any pedigrees or other material. While their names will remain on our list, I do not feel that I can continue to send them the newsletters, as it is considerable work and expense. So far I am doing this on my own; several members have contributed money for postage, and I am grateful for their help. especially appreciate family groups for my files. The first white settlers in and about Palatine Church were the two Nellis brothers, Christian and William. Just east of the present village of St. Johnsville, Hendrick Klock located. He had two daughters, Barvalis (Barbara) and Magdalena, who married the two Nellis pioneers, thus uniting those families by a double tie. The records are far from complete and there probably are errors. Milo Nellis has given several years to the work and has solved several baffling points but there remains a vast amount of research. Christian Nellis, pioneer, 1697-1771, age 74 by tombstone record, married Feb. 1718 (German Bible 'Record) Barvalis Klock. William Nellis 1694-1778, married Magdalena Klock. Hendrick Klock had ten children: 1. Col. Jacob Klock, 2. Honorich Jr. Johannes, 4. Johangurgh (assumed to be George, or "Old George" also called Ury or Jerry, married Margaret Wallrad (according to her father's will) She Was also called Maria Margaretha, Maria Margaretha Catharine or Maria Catharina. 5. Coorrad (minor in 1742) settled in Fairfield before the Revolution, 6. Hannarum (Minor in 1742) 7. Hanyost (minor in 1742) 8. Barvalis. 9. Magdalena. 10. Adam, not mentioned in father's will Items on the Walrath Family from the St. Johnsville Enterprise and News--Milo Nellis. John (Johannes) Walrath, blacksmith and ferryman, and wife Amelia Sutz were the parents of twelve children. Garret, the eldest son, born about 1740, was a powerful fellow, as Simms says, "Not afraid of man or devil." He was taken captive during the Battle of Oriskany, August 6, 1777, and turned over to an Indian guard who was leading him through the woods, when Garret severed the strands which held his hands behind him, killed the guard with his own hunting knife and returned -to the battlefield in time to help out with the finish. In the Enterprise and News dated May 1, 1929 was an article concerning Capt. Joseph Dygert and his men stating that his home before and during and for many years following the Revolution was at Fall Hill on the south side of the Mohawk-- this was adjacent to the home of '.11arner Dygert and General Herkimer. This article included an affidavit made by Henry J. Walrath, Apr. 3, 1837 in support of a pension claim for Capt. Dygert's widow, that he Walrath was then 77 years of age; that he was in the Battle of Oriskany, was taken prisoner there and carried off to Canada but succeeded in returning home the following January. In another article by Frank Duel, Utica, N.Y. he refers to an affidavit of Peter Walrath, a son of John, Blacksmith and ferryman. After the war he married Maria Catharina, a daughter of Warner Dygert of Fall Hill and his wife Magdalena Herkimer, sister of General Herkimer, and thereafter moved from the place of his birth, which was mentioned as a few miles West of Fort Plain to the settlement of Canajoharie called Buel where he died November 17, 1834. The St. Johnsville Dutch Reformed Church record gives the baptism, May 17, 1789, of Margaretha, daughter of Jacob Walrath of Gaesenberg, and wife Maria Charon, Gaesenberg was present day Hallsville, situated 3 or 4 miles south of Fort Plain on Otaquago Creek--also about 3 miles directly south of St. Johnsville, and adjacent to the lands of the pioneer Walrath settlers in Canajoharie district. #36 Steve Walrath says that Adam A. Walrath Jr., and wife Mary Zimmerman went to Conneautville, Pa. before 1850 to live with their son David Walrath. About 1850 Abraham Walrath and his and wife Elizabeth Shettleman moved to Conneautville and the parents moved to their home. Adam A. Wllrath Jr and wife are buried in the Conneautville cemetery. ***************** End of Newsletter # 5 Page 2 ********** Page 3 Newsletter #5-Additions and Corrections Death Record Gouverneur, New York, 17 March, 1972. It gives the genealogy of his English and New England ancestors, and also many MohawkValley ancestors. In the latter are included Walrath, Bellinger, Klock, Nellis, Michael, Brant, Fox, Helmer, Kimpago, Koch, Loux, Weaver and Zimmerman. The text of the genealogy has many references to these people, with dates, personal anecdotes, etc. especially of that branch of the family that Migrated to Wisconsin and Minnesota. We have the lists of 1710 and 1712. Children over 10 received adult rations. 1. In 1710, we find Gerhard Walrath, wife Maria and 2 children. 2. Nov 17, 1711, Rev. Kocherthal baptized Christina Elizabetha, child of Gerhard and Anna Maria. 3. Subsistence list, 1712, Gerhard and Anna Maria, 3 adults only. This would indicate that their oldest child was born in 1701/2, the two other children having died. 4. On June 6, 1717 one Johan Adam Walrath was a sponsor for the baptism of the child of Johan and Sibyl Leer. Could this be Gerhard and Anna Maria's eldest child, later called Adam Walrath? 5. Subsistence list, 1710, Hendrick Walrath and wife Christina, no ch. 6. Subsistence list, 1712, Hendrick Walrath, wife Christina, 1 child. This would indicate that their 1st child was born in 1711 or 1712 7. Due to the extreme hardships the Palatines endured in those early days, records were few or nonexistent. In 1717 Ulrich Simmindinger one of the Palatines, returned to Germany and published a list of Palatines remaining in New York. On this list appeared Hendrick Wallerrath" and two children, and Gerhard Walrath and three children 8. In 1713, Gerhard Walrath was sent, with two others to England, to petition queen Anne for justice for the Palatines, but he died before he could return. We have never been able to ascertain the names of Gerhard's children, unless the eldest was the Johan Adam mentioned in item 4. We have record of an early "Hendrick Walrath, Jr." so perhaps the eldest was Hendrick, and Johan Adam was someone who came later from Germany, but we have no record of such an arrival. 9. In 1746 we have the handwritten will of Hendrick Walrath, signed "Henry Wallrad" in which he mentions his wife Christina, elder son , Hendrick, younger son, Johan Adolf, and daughters Margret (later called Maria Margaretha, Maria Margaretha Catharina or Maria Catharina), wife of Geo. Klock, Elizabeth, wife of Geo. Windecker, and Anna Rosina, wife of Frederick Bellinger Jr. 10. The earliest record re have, (obtained by Betty Cathey) from Fonda courthouse is of a Hendrick Walrath, 1717-1756. We believe that this is the Hendrick mentioned as the elder son in the will, item 9. Would like someone to furnish proof of this. 11. Hendrick's younger son called Johan Adolf in the will was later known as Johannes or John. On April 1780 he obtained a license to operate a ferry across the Mohawk near Ft. Plain. For many years it was known as "Walrath's Ferry." He married Amelia Sutz and their children have been well documented from baptismal records. 12. We have never been able to prove for sure the names of the wife or children of Hendrick 1717-1756. We are reasonably sure of two of them, Henry, 1742, who married Elizabeth Bowman, and Jacob, 1744, who married Maria Charon. Henry, called Esquire, was an innkeeper, Justice of the Peace, and took over "Walrath's Ferry from his uncle John. Henry and Jacob's children well documented. ***************** End of Newsletter # 6 Page 2 ********** Page 3 13. We have the records of the Dutch Reformed Church, Stone Arabia, Town of Palatine, of Jacob Wallrath, b 25 Feb. 1723, m 27 June 1747, d 1 Feb. 1790. DAR records give wife's name as Magdalena Fox. Several researchers believe that this Jacob was a younger son of Hendrick and Christina and not mentioned in the will. Hendrick made his will in 1746 and Jacob was not married until 1747. It does not seem likely that Hendrick would not mention a 23 year old unmarried son. Bruce Walrod has listed in his journal many descendants of Jacob 1723. Jacob and his son Nicholas were both at the battle of Oriskany in the Revolution. The later generations of Jacob spell their name Walrod to this day. 14. From the records of the Dutch 'Reformed Church, Stone Arabia, Town of Palatine we find the following: Heinrich Wallrath, born in the year 1737, died 3 Jan. 1791, married June 17, 1758, Catharine, widow of Henry Walradt, d June 11, 1797, age 56 years, born 1741. Who was Catherine's first husband? 15. Some researchers say that Catharina Klock, daughter of George Klock and Maria Margaretha Wallrad married her first cousin Henry Walrath, Jr. Puzzle, Who was Henry Walrath, Sr.? 16. Records show that Adam A. Walrath, 1750, married Magdalena Klock, 1755, dau of George Klock and Maria Margaretha Wallrad. We have the record of an Adam Walrath, whose wife was Anna Barbara. Was he Adam A's father? We have a lot more puzzles but that is enough for now! Does anybody have an answer for any of the above? Jacob Walrath, born Stone Arabia 1723 in 1763 he bought Lot No. 49 in the Waggoner patent. His son Nicholas was the first settler on the Gilchrist farm before the war. His second son Adolph was living somewhere in Springfield, but not located as people at that early date had a bad habit of neglecting to record their early deeds. The Plank road was surrendered May 23 1870 by E. Cory, Pres. H. E. Williams Secy. and Alexander Smith, John Smith, John A. Walrath, Oliver N. Shipman and Geo. Springer, directors. After the hotel burned, Tom Pegg moved up to the village and lived in the Walrath house, the stone building. The home of Peter I. Walrath was one of the "preaching places" in Springfield according to the reports of 1796/7. The names of Peter I Walrath and wife have come down through the generations as a Christian family giving Christian hospitality to the circuit preachers, their home being called a "Methodist Tavern". Clark-newspaper clippings The settlers of the Mohawk Valley, mostly Dutch and Palatines, were among the most vigilant, brave and active of any of the settlements of the 13 colonies and with the news of Lexington and Concord, had acted immediately to provide for public safety. The British strategy of 1777 formulated in England called for General Burgoyne to go from Canada up Lake Champlain and down the Hudson to units with General Howe's army and then meet St. Leger's army which was to go via Lake Ontario, Oswego River, Oneida Lake, Wood Creek, capture Fort Stanwix (Rome, N.Y.) and proceed down the Mohawk and wipe out the settlements in the valley. If the plan had been successful it would have been the death knell of American Independence, as it would have separated New England from the other colonies. Oriskany-Bennington-Saratoga "Without them there would be no 48 states today, reaching from ocean to ocean in a single united country. These three battles that smashed Burgoyne's crucial drive at the heart of the new America in the 2nd year of its creation, are the contribution of New York to the land of which it is a part." Now York Times, October, 1925 "The Stars and Stripes" was flown in action from the bastions of Old Fort Stanwix for the first time on Aug. 3, 1777. It was hurriedly put together from a soldier's white shirt, a woman's red petticoat, and the blue cloth of a Captain's uniform. On the same day, in regiments under General Herkimer assembled to march from Fort Dayton (now Herkimer) to the aid of Fort Stanwix. Two of these regiments are believed to have been commanded by related families, namely the Palatine Regiment under command of Colonel Jacob Klock and the German Flatts and Kingsland Regiment under command of Colonel Peter Bellinger. The Battle of Oriskany (the bloodiest of the Revolution) took place in a wooded ravine, eight miles East of Fort Stanwix, and just off the present road from Oriskany to -Rome. Also, in 1793, Peter Storms Sr. bought a 100 acre farm in the Klock and Nellis patent. #4 Alice Gubi was inquiring about an Anna or Hannah Deck who married a ______ Walrath. Among the Germans and Dutch the common nickname for Anna was Nancy. We have found an Abraham Walrath who married Nancy Deck. We have no dates for Abraham, but he was the son of Abraham Walrath, 1801 and Sally Packard, 1811, and the grandson of John G. Walrath and Elizabeth Lintner. Dec 10, 1754--Patent granted to Henry Walradt & Godfred Helmer. From a newspaper clipping sent in by Jerry Walrath. By Jason Robards. "How I overcame my Fear of Snakes. "I've been afraid of snakes most of my life," said film star Jason Robards. "I've been afraid of them ever since my younger brother, Cris, was bitten by a rattler when we were children in California, and he almost died. "Then I found myself playing a desert wanderer in "The Ballad of Cable Hogue," with a key part of the story requiring that I capture and subsist on rattle- snakes, gila monsters and other wasteland animal life. "The best way out of the predicament, I figured was to become an expert reptile handler. My mentor became biologist-herpetologist John M. Walrath of Mesa, Ariz. He got me acquainted with things like a 7-foot Eastern diamond- back rattler. (Photo shows director Sam Peckinpah) In the movie I have a scene with a live, 5-foot rattler, putting him into a bag. Scenes like that couldn't be phonied. They had to be filmed real. And as my skill in handling snakes increased, so did my confidence." Jerry Walrath wants to know if anyone knows anything about the following children of William Walrath, 1772- 1858, and wife Margaret Irving, 1776-1839. Jacob, 1798 Mary Alice, 1812 John, 1801 Alvin, 1814 Adam, 1803 Mathew, 1816 Benjamin, 1806 Alex, 1818 Margaret, 1609 Elizabeth, 1820 I am repeating the will sent in by Robert G. Cooke, #55. Walrath, deceased) as Tenants in common of one undivided seventh part of the three pieces of land. (It here described the land as belonging formerly to Hendrick H. Walrath) being the farm in possession of Jacob A. Walrath at the time of his death (Deed 1793) And your petitioners further shows that the following persons are also seized in fee simple as tenants in common of the above described pieces of land in the following proportions, to wit:- Adolph Walrath of one undivided seventh part; Jacob Walrath Mayer & Anne, his wife one undivided seventh part (the Jacob in right of his wife.) Adam Walrath, William Walrath, Christian Walrath and Caty Beekman each one undivided fifth of one undivided seventh part; Ebenezer Cox and John Cox each one undivided fourth of one undivided fifth of one undivided seventh; Luther Russel and Nancy, his wife, one fourth of one fifth of one seventh; John Sutz and Betsy, his wife, one fourth of one fifth of one seventh part; Jacob C. Your petitioners further show that Elizabeth Walrath, widow of the said Jacob A. Walrath, deceased, has a right of dower in each of the said three pieces of land. Dated June 27th, 1828. Signed John I. Failing & Mary Failing, (his wife) Doris Moser asks: Who were the parents of Jacob Walrath, Jr. born 1775, and whose wife was Maria Cornue? She also asks about the family of Jacob Walrath whose wife was Maria Charon. In this regard we have the following facts: From Milo Nellis in the Enterprise and News, St. Johnsville NY: Our next clue is in the will of Jacob H. Walrath (Canajoharie District) dated June 29, 1810 and probated April 22, 1816 which mentions his wife Mria, sons Casper, Adolph, George and John, and daughters, Elizabeth, Caty and Margaret. His death is recorded in the Send Hill Church as Jan or June 2, 1812 age 68 which would make his birth 1744. The birth previously given of Henry Walrath born 1742, died 1821, this Jacob H. Walrath, born 1744 died 1812 would be that Henry's brother, two years younger. Mrs. Frances E. Reid, Douglas Wyoming seeks records to prove that her great- grandfather John J. (Jacob) Walrath was a brother of Adolph (Jacob) Walrath which she knows to be true by a statement made to her by her grandfather, David Walrath. This will of Jacob H. Walrath proves by the names of his wife and sons, Jacob and Adolph, that he was the Jacob Walrath who married in 1770 Maria Charon. The St. Johnsville Dutch Reformed Church Record give the baptism, May 17,1789 of Margaretha, daughter of Jacob Walrath of Gaesenberg and wife Maria--Gaesenberg was present day Halleville situated 3 or 4 miles south west of Fort Plain on Otaquago Creek-- also about three miles directly south of St. Johnsville and adjacent to the lands of the pioneer Walrath settlers in Canajoharie district. Walrath) Calvin H. Walrath, native of Jefferson County, NY, came to Mich. in 1869, lived in Kalamazoo until 1875, returned to Watertown NY, and was in livestock business for two years. Was a bookkeeper for the factory at South Bay City from 1877-78. In 1878-79 was a engineer in Fray and Merrill's grist mill. He married Ada Truax of Watertown in 1879, (married in the Township of Hampton). They had two children. Henry S. Walrath, born 1838 in NY, came to Saginaw, Mich. in 1862 where he worked in saw mills for two years. He then moved to Bay City, worked for Moore and Smith for seven years. He married Annie J. Fraszer of NY. Three children. Mrs. Flint sent in an item she found in the 1850 census, Almstead twp. Cuyahoga Co. Ohio. It shows A. Walworth (another spelling) 41, merchant, and living in the household Mrs. Flint's great grandmother, Dorothea (Walrath) Thornton, 38, and three of her four daughters, 18, 10, and 5. There are some errors here according to the Bible records she has. Dorothea's husband died in 1853, but here in 1850 is the family broken up and living with the uncle. She presumes that this A. was Adolphus, but according to the Bible record he was born in 1803, not 1811. Abram, nearer the date, b 1809 (listed 1811) had a different wife. Can anybody shed any light on this? Notes on the John G. Walrath family sent in by Mrs. Drake, Town Historian of Canisteo, NY. Steuban Co. New York--from Mohawk Region. John G. Walrath, who was born in 1775, married Elizabeth Lintener, who was of German descent, as was Mr. Walrath, whose parents came to America ante Revolution. The Lintener Family Bible is in the hands of a descendant, Mrs. Nelson Wilson of Waverly, NY. Elizabeth Lintener was born Sept. 4, 1769. Mr. and Mrs. Walrath lived in Canajoharie, NY, married 6/8/1794, Town of Minden, Dutch Ref. Church. To John and Elizabeth were born Albert, Nancy (Jos. Robinson) John, Peter, Katherine, (Abram Wagner); Laney (d ch.) Abraham A., George, Betsey (John Keeler) Laney 2nd (Abraham Miller) and 2 who d in infancy. John G. Walrath d in 1865, Mrs. Walrath d at Minden, NY, Nov. 16, 1857. Albert Walrath, son of John G. and Eliz. Lintener: He was probably the one who married Catherine Yule, b 10/2-1791, dau of James and Margaret Christman Yule, and a sister to Elizabeth (Betsey) Yule who married George J. House who came to Cameron, NY ca same time as Walraths and others from Mohawk Valley to Cameron, Jasper, etc. Abraham J. Walrath, son of Albert was called (Blacksmith Abe) to designate him from others of the same name. Abraham came to this vicinity in 1845 and lived in both Cameron and Jasper. He was in 1850 assessed on 316 acres in Cameron. He married Mariah Deck of Jasper. To them were born Nancy, (Franklyn D Ordway), Catherine,(Jos. B. Miller), Mrs. Ezra Chatfield of Jasper and Claud. From 1870 census of Cameron NY: Walrath, A. 52 yrs. Maria 49 Catherine 19 Mary 17 Maggie 12, Nancy 11 Howard 10 Frank 7 Mrs. Catherine Miller d 5/24/1911, Jasper NY, b Jan.1851; m Apr 1886 to J.B. Miller--survived by bro. Frank of Elmira and sis. Mrs. Franklin Ordway. Mrs. Drake- sent in data on many others of this family. I will publish later as I know you will want to have more birth records. The families include George Walrath, son of John G., Abraham, son of John G., Solomon, son of Black Abe, Oscar Walrath, son of Josiah, Russell Walrath, son of Josiah, son of Abraham and many later members of the family, also wills and census records. ***************** End of Newsletter # 11 Page 5 ********** Newsletter #11 Page 6 Here is an interest item sent in by one of the members--I'm sorry I forgot who it was. MADISON, WISCONSIN (UPI) On Feb. 18, 1876, Georgia Walrath, a 13-Year old school girl from Augusta made some amazingly accurate predictions about the world of 1976. Portions of her essay were printed in the February edition of the Wisconsin Ledger which is published by the Wisconsin American Revolution Bi-Centennial Commission here. In a centennial essay, Georgia predicted the following for the 200th anniversary of the founding of the United States: Women, without doubt, will vote and hold some public offices more than they do now. It is not likely they will know much more about the sun than we do now, but I presume there will be machinery invented, something like a balloon, so that people can go to the moon and back in about the time it takes to go around the world. I think the Indians will all be driven out of the Black Hills and that the white faces will have as complete possession there as they have in the Rocky Mountains. Cars will be used more than balloons on land, because they are more convenient and safer, though balloons go the fastest. Balloons will be used more than they are now. They probably will be propelled or navigated by machinery and used to cross the oceans and seas. Our knowledge of distance will be nearly complete. We will know as much about the interior of Africa as we know now about the U.S. I think nearly everything will be done by machinery without anybody to tend to it except a man to go around every Saturday to oil it up. Georgia may have missed the mark on at least one prediction: "I think that dry goods and groceries will be very cheap. Records of the Dutch Reformed Church of St. Johnsville.
