The ancestors of the Jaquiths were French Huguenots who first fled France sometime before 1628, spent time in Cornwall, England, and are believed to have returned temporarily to France before departing for America early in 1643. They became  a well known, highly respected family of patriots; first --in presence and in numbers-- when, in response to the alarm of April 19, 1775, the minutemen and militia of Billerica, Massachusetts mustered on the common at Pollard's Tavern before marching to Concord and Meriam's Corner to face the British at the outbreak of the American Revolution.

Notes for ABRAHAM
JAQUITH IV:
Abraham was given instructions from his father-in-law, Ebenezer Farley, to make gifts of money to Benjamin and Samuel Farley, sons of Ebenezer's brother Samuel who had died in 1717. Evidence indicates that Ebenezer was the guardian of these boys and another boy, Nathaniel Ranger, after his bro- ther's death, and that Abraham assumed this responsibility when Ebenezer died in 1728. When Benjamin came of age , he took over the guardianship, and in 1738/39, when Samuel reached the age of twenty-one, he quitclaimed his interest in the Farley homestead to Abraham.
Myrl Jaquith, email 29 Mar 2004: As far as the Farley-Jaquith house is concerned, I haven't been there since 1986 but I remember it is at 161 Concord Road, a short way east of Rt. 3 which is a major north-south divided highwayin Billerica. As you drive east from Rt. 3, it is on your left. When I was there, Joseph Jaquith Casey lived in the house. In 1994, Reader's Digest published an article about a Union soldier from Massachusetts named Jerome Peirce who died at Spotsylvania Courthouse, VA and is buried in the Fredericksburg National Cemetery. He married a Jaquith woman and they lived in that house. It mentioned that the current (1994) occupant was Peter Jaquith Casey, Joe's son.

JAQUITH:
Ebenezer was one of the Jaquiths at the Battle of Lexington at the beginning of the Revolution in 1775. His son Ebenenzer II served in the same unit, and his brother Timothy was reportedly there, but was not included in the same muster roll (see below). The town of Hollis was the first town to set up a monument on which can be read the names of all who responded to the alarm of April 19, 1775. Included in the list of names... Ebenezer Jaquith. The Battle of Lexington, which resulted as part of "the alarm of 19 April 1775", was a brief skirmish that marked the first military clash in the American Revolution (1775-1783). It took place on April 19, 1775, between some 70-77 colonial minutemen commanded by Captain John Parker, and about 700 British soldiers marching on Concord, Massachusetts, under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Francis Smith. The American militia, warned of the British approach by the patriot Paul Revere and others, had assembled to halt the British. Inspired by the words of Captain Parker, " Stand your ground; don't fire unless fired upon, but if they mean to have a war, let it begin here", the Americans refused to disperse when ordered to do so by the commander of the British advance units. Gunfire was exchanged and eight Americans were killed before the minutemen retreated. Source: http://americaninsuranceagency.com/wilmington.html
On the fated morning of April 19,1775, two companies of Minute Men started outon the road to Lexington very early in response to the "alarum," one of them commanded by Captain Cadwallader Ford, the other by Capt. Timothy Walker. Later another went out, commanded by Capt. John Harnden. They fought at Lex- ington, Concord and Bunker Hill. The number of Wilmington men who fought in the Revolutionary War was 260, including 24 captains, several of whom rose to higher command. This indicates that nearly all the able-bodied men of Wilmington were engaged in the struggle for liberty. From the Muster Roll of Capt. Timothy Walker's Co. of Wilmington, Mass. which marched in reponse to the alarm of Lexington 4/19/1775 were the following members of the Jaquith family. Sgt. James Jaquith (Promoted to Capt.) John Jaquith, Jr. Son of Lt. John Jaquith Samuel Jaquith Nathan Jaquith David Jaquith Son of Lt. Notes for Benjamin
Jaquith:
Lehtinen, History of Jaffrey: "Benjamin, younger brother of Ebenezer . . . was the first of the Jaquith name to come to Jaffrey. He was in Fitchfurg, Mass., which was set off from Lunenburg in 1764, as early as 1766, when his oldest child Phebe was born. He was highway surveyor in Fitchburg in 1776, and came to Jaffrey soon after, and continued to live here for ten or twelve years. He owned 100 arces of land in Jaffrey, lot 18, range 6, north of the present village of East Jaffrey and south of the so-called Baldwin farm. He served on committees to lay out highways, 1779-81; was fence viewer and grand juryman in1782, and field driver in 1785. On Aug. 11, 1786, he sold his Jaffrey farm to Thomas Brattle, a prominent citizen of Boston . In February, 1787, with his wife 'Pheby,'... he returned to Fitchburg where he was promptly warned out of town, against the friendly interposition of Doctor Marshall, presumably a relative of 'Pheby'". Whatever the reason --possibly something that went back to his previous residency in Fitchburg, the selectmen of the town made it clear he and his family were not welcomed. History of Jaffrey continues, "After giving expression to their official desires, no further action appears to have been taken by the selecmen and Benjamin continued to abide in Fitchburg until his deatrh, Feb. 11, 1810." Abbott (quoted in ):
"It was my grandfather, Joseph Jaquith, who joined the patriots on the arrival of the message from Lexington. He was ploughing in 'The Old Field' in the rear of our home when the word of danger reached him. He hastily un- hitched his oxen from the plough, ran for the house, took his gun from the wall over the door in 'Aunt Abigail's room,' saying, 'The redcoats are coming. He was not a member of an organized company previous to the alarm, but started off as many others did at the call of need. When he returned with other Billerica soldiers, there was but little military precision; their guns were slung over their shoulders in an easy-going manner."

Notes for EBENEZER
JAQUITH, JR.:
There are several reports of Ebenezer's military history which are based on his name being included in various rosters. In his own declaration filed with his pension application in September 1832, he noted, "...we were no longer than a fortnight in any one place and I cannot recollect them all..." He makes no mention of his service with Col. Green and the Minute Men who marched on April 19, 1775, or of being at Cambridge on May 1, 1775 or at Bunker Hill, although his name is included in lists of men who were present. At 17 years old, he was
a private in Capt. Timothy Walker's Co. of Militia,
Col. Green's regiment, and marched with the "Minute Men" on the alarm of April 19,1775, serving for two days. He was also included on a list in Wilmington, November 25, 1776 of men drafted to reinforce the army at a moment's notice until March 1, 1777. (Ref: Massachusetts Soldiers and Sailors in Revolution.) Solomon Pollard’s (Billerica) Co. of Militia, (see James Stevens’ Diary), and is named in the list of men in Camp at Cambridge, Mass., May 1, 1775. He is also listed as having served at the battle of Bunker Hill. The story of his military service in the Revolution is best given as he himself told it in his declaration filed with his pension application. In part of
his
declaration filed as part of his application for a military
pension,
Ebenezer stated:
"I went from Billerica,
Mass. through Providence, R.I.
and thence to the
vicinity of Kingsbridge, crossed the North River at Fish Kill, and was at White Plains...I was dismissed at Rahway, N.J..." I found Fishkill on the
map not far from Danbury, MA, and further south is White Plains.
Rahway, NJ was easy, but "Kingsbridge" is now a neighborhood
in
the northwest part of the Bronx County. However, prior to 1873, this
area was part of Westchester County. The "North
River" he
crossed at Fishkill is the Hudson River. (The South River is
the
Delaware River. These marked the north and south boundaries of the
Dutch controlled areas in the 1600s.)
His declaration reads as follows:
Ebenezer Jaquith
Declaration, Sept. 5, 1832,
before Probate Court of Cheshire County. I, Ebenezer Jaquith a resident of Jaffrey, a. 73 yrs. last Nov. duly sworn &c... 1st that in Dec. of the year 1776, as I think, I enlisted and served three months in the company of Capt. John Trull Lieut Amos Foster, in Col. Thatcher’s regt. of Mass. Militia— that I went from Billerica, Mass. through Providence, R. I. and thence to the vicinity of Kingsbridge, crossed the North River at Fish Kill, and was at White Plains, but I do not recollect being at Albany. Col. Thatcher’s Regt. was at so many places that I think we were no longer than a fortnight in any one place and I cannot recollect them all; that I was dismissed at Rahway, N.J. “2d— That I enlisted as a private soldier in the company commanded by Capt. John White in the Rigiment of Col. Stearns; and about the first of April 1777 or 1778, but as I believe, the latter, went to Roxbury from Fitchburg and from thence to Castle William, now Fort Independence in Boston Harbor; that I served three months on the Castle and was then discharged I further say that I am the same Ebenezer Jaquith mentioned in the affidavit of Benjamin Johnson. I was born at Billerica, Mass., in the year 1759. I suppose there is a record of my age at Billerica When called into the service the first time I lived at Billerica, and last at Fitchburg, Mass., and since then I have lived at Jaffrey, Cheshire Co., N. H. & now reside there. I enlisted as before stated-- At the Castle there was a company of Militia commanded by Capt. Washburn While Col. Thatcher’s regt. was near Kingsbridge there were three other regts. there, the whole commanded by Gen. Heath, but I do not recollect any of the Colonels. As we were marched down the river to take a fort (which however was not taken) some men were frozen to death it being extremely cold — Never received any written dis-charge The Rev. Laban Ainsworth and Dea. David Gillman [Gilmore] live near me in said Jaffrey and can I believe testify as to my character for veracity and belief of my services as a soldier of the revolution. Statement of David Gillman 2d [Gilmore] and Rev. Laban Ainsworth vouched for by Asa Parker, Register of Probate. Certificate by Benjamin Johnson of Leominster that he served with Ebenezer Jaquith, then of Fitchburg, at Castle William. Also certificate to same effect by Zebadiah Rogers of Billerica. The dates
in the application seems to disagree with those below:

To: "Joanne" <[email protected]> Subject: Fw: Jaquith name research Date: Sun, 20 Jun 2004 20:52:25 -0600 Joanne, Thought you might find this inquiry I received of interest. Myrl Hello Myrl,
I have an inquiry for you regarding a name I found chiseled in rock along the Lassen Applegate trail in northwester Nevada. The inscription reads GEORGE. N. JAqUITH.
JULY. THE. 16th. 1852. from. WIS.
I
have
reproduced the
inscription exactly as it reads, including
the periods after each word, and the use of upper case letters primarily as shown. The lower case q appears raised up to align itself with the upper and lower edges of all the other letters as the only exception. I have traveled through this area before but only noticed the name on this last trip. My mind wandered as to how it got there: Wagon train member leaving his mark, Young boy doodling, or better yet, with enough room to write Wisconsin in full, I envisioned, " George, we're leaving, come along now!" If you know anything about George or his kin could you pass it along to me. I would like to know a little about him. This was one nasty can- yon pass they had to get through to get to Oregon or the California gold fields. Sincerely, Michael D. Scott Forgot to mention, that near George's name was carved: EJT
7-16-52 Hi
Michael,
Here's what I found in The Jaquith Family in America by George Oakes Jaquith and Georgetta Jaquith Walker, New England Historic Genealogical Society, (Boston, 1982), p. 135: "Isaac(7) Jaquith (Abraham [6-5-4-3-2-1] was born at New Gloucester, Maine, 18 Jan 1788 and died at Sullivan, Wisconsin, 11 Nov 1854. He married at Litchfield, Maine 15 September 1810 Jane Tinkham, who was born there 19 July 1791 and died at Sullivan, 15 April 1876. Both Isaac and Jane are buried in Pleasant Valley Cemetery, Oak Hill or Palmyra, Wisconsin. Isaac lived on his father's farm at Litchfield and Brownsville, Maine, until 1830, when, with his brother John, he moved to a tract of land at Sullivan, given by the government for military service." They apparently had 12 children, of which the ninth was George Nathaniel Jaquith. "George Nathaniel, b. 14 Apr. 1828; d. 7 Apr. 1864, killed by Indians, east of the Steen Mountains, Harney Co., OR; unm. Nathaniel with his brothers Charles and Phineas were among the company of 33 men from southern WI , who set out for CA in the spring of 1852; L. Allan White of San Ramon, CA, reported that in 1962 he found the engraving of "George N. Jaquith July 16, 1852" in High Rock Canyon in the remote northwestern part of Nevada (at Gerlach). Nathaniel became part owner of a ranch on the John Day River in east-central OR; when the Army needed civilian assistance in that area a lawyer, C. W. Miller of Canyon City, was made captain of a posse of 15 soldiers and 30 civilians to find some Bannock Indians who had stolen some horses. Nathaniel was part of a detail of 4 men who were killed during this episode." Michael, if you have a photo of this engraving or if you ever get back there to take a picture, I would really like to have you e-mail one to me. Thanks, Myrl
.

1833. She was born ca. Nov 1808, and died 05 Feb 1881. Notes for Elijah Jaquith:
Elijah was a blacksmith and mechanical genius, and had a shop and dwelling in East Jaffrey. He is said to have invented Colt's Revolver, the first repeating arms. Jaquith & Walker, paragraph 154. (courtesy of Myrl Jaquith) Elijah moved to Shefford, Canada East, 50 years after the Revolution, but returned to Jaffrey to marry Sarah Crosby. The family lived in Canada for some years before returning to Jaffrey. All the children are listed in Annett and Lehtinen, History of Jaffrey, although some were born in Canada. Elijah was a machinist and a mechanical genius. He improved Colt's revolver, the first repeating arms, working out his models in his blacksmith shop in East Jaffrey (ibid., 2:440). Myrl Jaquith: I grew up with the family legend that Samuel Colt had stolen Elijah Jaquith's idea and had patented it as his own. In 1961... (I met) Dr. Wallace W. White, who was an optometrist in Burlington, VT and owned the Harbor Hideaway restaurant and White's Gun He had all sorts of antique firearms on display in the restaurant. He commented that he had only encountered the name Jaquith in regard to guns, so I told him about the family legend. He replied that he couldn't say that Colt had stolen the invention but that Elijah Jaquith had indeed made a few revolving rifles and that he, White, owned 2 of them. He had loaned one to the Smithsonian (where I later saw it) and the other was in a bank vault in Burlington. The rifle at the Smithsonian was included in a display which was entitled "Colt's Competitors". It was a 36 cal. carbine in which the cylinder rotated above the breech. More About Elijah Jaquith & Sarah Crosby:: Burial: Conant Cemetery, Jafffrey, NH Marriage Notes for Elijah Jaquith and Sarah Crosby: (Ref. Eunice Halbedel, email 18 May 2004: ) "...on a rock which I've passed many times... on one side it says Lacy, on the other side it says Jacquith and it is the grave of Elijah (died Nov. 19, 1866), his wife, Sarah C. (died Feb. 5, 1881), and their son Lafayette (died Jan. 7, 1850). There are also 3 newer graves in the same plot, a Dr. Frederick Wellington (can't read the dod), Winnie Wellington, died Dec. 2, 1960, and a Boutelle who died Mar. 30, 1950. There must be some kind of relation because this particular site is closed in with a granite wall around it. The Lacy's must be related also since they are on the other side of the rock. It really is just a big boulder with the names on it, and the only one like it in Conant Cemetery. " 168 viii. Walter Herbert Jaquith.

He became a prominent man in that town; deputy sheriff and deacon in the ch. He lost his property through a dishonest agent, and finally rem. to Java, N.Y. Jaquith & Walker, paragraph 162. Collins and Miriam resided at Gilsom and Keene, NH, where he had a shoe business. At Keene, Collins was a leader in the community and a deacon in the Congregational Church. He was president of the Library Society and on the committee for building the church meetinghouse. Through the dishonesty of the St. Louis, MO agent of his shoe business, Collins lost all his property. He and Miriam removed to Java, NY, soon after 1832, where he was listed with his family in teh 1850 census (Hoosick, Rensselaer Co., NY, M432-585). Aaron Mansfield, later husband of Betsey Jaquith (no. 161), lived at Java several years and managed the farm for Collins before Aaron moved to Vermont. Myrl Jaquith: Jaquith & Walker state that Miriam was born at Peterboro, VT. However, I cannot find Peterboro, VT nor have I ever heard of a municipality in Vermont named Peterboro. However, there is a town named Peterborough in New Hampshire and I believe this to be her actual birthplace. He was ploughing in 'The Old Field' in the rear of our home when the word of danger reached him. He hastily unhitched his oxen from the plough, ran for the house, took his gun from the wall over the door in 'Aunt Abigail's room,' saying, 'The redcoats are coming. He was not a member of an organized company previous to the alarm, but started off as many others did at the call of need. When he returned with other Billerica soldiers, there was but little military precision; their guns were slung over their shoulders in an easy-going manner."
