In 23 April1883, Olaf and Agnes Edman and four of their five children immigrated from Sweden to America One daughter, nine year old Karin Edman, had been left behind with grandparents in Sweden.
Olaf and Agnes settled first in Slayton, in the southern part of Minnesota, but later moved north to Clarissa, Minnesota
in covered wagons, driving their livestock before them. Their last child, son Olaf, was born there in 1885, making a total of six children. Letters were written frequently back and forth from Sweden, always with the hope that the family would later be joined by Karin. By 1980, contact with Karin's descendants had been lost, but there was always concern about how and where they were and if they knew about their family in America.

Viola Sturdivant, the widow of a Robbins cousin, was working for County Clerk, Wallace Robbins, in the Hubbard Co. courthouse when a baby boy was born to Justin and Keena Robbins Peterson. The baby was named Justin Edmon, but he was always called by the nickname, Jerry. Family tradition claims that either Viola or Wallace Robbins, the baby's grandfather, was so displeased with Justin, Sr. that when it came time to fill in the certificate, "Jerry" was written as the baby's name.

"Auntie Pal" Smothermon was one of those very special people who bring blessings to everyone they touch. In her obituary, she is noted as having been a school secretary, a docent for the Santa Marie Museum, a published poet, wife, mother of 4, grandmother of 13, great-grandmother of 14, and a member of Grace Baptist Church. There are no words to describe this warm, loving, giving Christian woman. All family members and friends will always smile when they think of her.
