ABOUT ME
The Maddocks had title to an estate
in the Isle
of Man which was purchased by Henry Hutton Maddock from his wife's family, the Bernards.
The Bernards were from Co.
Carlow,
but owned an estate called “Mount Bernard” in the 1830s and 1840s, in
Lonan in the Isle of Man. In the 1841 census the Bernards are living at
"Mount Bernard" which was next door to a property named Balladhoo. The
family living there in 1841 was named Kelly. The estate was 60 acres in Lonan near Douglas, the
capital. There are some 600 'Balla's on the
As described in the story of Arthur O'Brien Bernard and his wife Anna Frances Bernard
the family became indebted in 1830 and the estate called Balladhoo was put
into a trust for 21 years for Anna Frances Bernard.
Henry Hutton Maddock married Anna Frances Bernard in Dublin in 1851. In
the
marriage notice for Henry Maddock and Anna Bernard her father was described as “Arthur
O'Brien
Bernard, esq., of Carlow, and
In 1854 a
document was
drawn up for the Bernards to sell the "Balladhoo" estate in the Isle of Man to Henry Hutton Maddock for
£200. This deed was registered in 1855. A year later another deed dated Jan 9th 1855 was drawn up to sell Balladhoo to Mary Maddock (Mary Maddock was the mother of Henry Maddock and mother-in-law of
Anna Bernard)
In 1873 a deed shows the estate was sold to Mary Maddock for the sum of five shillings, far less than the £200 originally agreed on. Then, in an indenture dated 1875 Mary Maddock sold the estate back to Henry and Anna for five shillings. This indenture was not registered in the Isle of Man Registry Office until 1904, probably at the time that Henry Hutton Maddock was making his will
There was an additional deed in 1896 which described the sale of Balladhoo by Edward Gelling and his wife Anne to Henry Maddock of Balladhoo House of "lands of Balladhoo" which Gelling had purchased from Andrew Bowman in 1888. It appears from the various documents that describe the property first owned by the Bernards called "Mount Bernard" (later called Balladhoo House) and the adjacent property also known as Balladhoo, eventually were all owned by Henry Maddock.
Several of these deeds
were witnessed by Olivia Gracey. Henry Hutton Maddock had a
sister named Olivia who was born in 1815 in Dublin. I could not find a
marriage for Olivia Maddock but I did find a burial record for
Olivia Gracey of Rathfarnham, Co Dublin in 1894 at the age of 79 (which
means she would have been born in 1815). I can only assume that
the Olivia Gracey who witnessed the deeds for Henry and Mary Maddock
was Henry's sister and Mary's daughter. I have yet to find the proof.
Although the Maddocks
owned Balladhoo in the Isle of Man they also maintained a residence in Tandragee, Co Armagh.
Henry Maddock employed his son-in-law, John Kelly who owned an adjacent property, as steward of the farm. While living in Tandragee
Henry Hutton Maddock and his son Arthur
Hamilton Maddock rented a shop
at 47 Duke St.
1891 census for Lonan, IoM, at Balladoo Farm lists:
• Anna Maddock 1841 age 50 born in IoM • Henry Maddock born in Dublin 1831 age 60. Civil engineer • Mona Maddock 1873 aged 18 born in Dublin • Standish 1877 aged 14 born Launde Ayce, Armagh, Ireland • Edward Maddock 1871 aged 20 born in Dublin (actual birth year was 1861 so he was 30, not 20) |
Either Mona's age is wrong or her place of birth. If she was born in Dublin then her birth year is before 1866.
In the 1881 and 1894 Brown's Directory - Lonan, Henry Maddock is listed as "farmer and landowner, Balladhoo"
In the Isle of Man Times in 1894 a notice of sale of farm stock was posted
The family relocated to 1 Newsham Terrace in Douglas but retained the farm. (I
could not locate Newsham Terrace on Google maps. It appears to be a row
of houses on Woodbourne Street near the junction with York Rd. in
Douglas)
In 1901 Henry, Anna, Edward, Mona and Henry Gayer Maddock were back in Tandragee.
At the same time Anna Olivia (Posie), who was married to John Kelly,
was living in the Isle of Man and Standish, her brother, is staying with Olivia and John Kelly. Arthur
Maddock, the eldest son, died in Liverpool in 1895. In both the
1891 and 1901 Isle of Man census Elinore (Ellie) is visiting a cousin,
Eliza Daly. In the 1901 census Harriet (Bridie) is also visiting Eliza Daly.
Anna
Frances Maddock (nee Bernard)
Henry Hutton Maddock
died in Douglas, Isle of Man at the age of 84. He was buried in Onchan on the 13th November 1905. Henry Maddock left a will dated May 1904.
The application
for probate, filed by his executor, son Edward, lists Henry's children:
Edward, Eleanor, Harriet, Olivia (Kelly) and Mona on the Island and
Standish and Henry G in South Africa.
- Arthur Hamilton Maddock eloped from the Isle of Man to St Helens, Lancs in April 1873 with Eliza Ann Johnson Birtles (b 1858), daughter of James Wilson Birtles (a publican of Douglas IofM). They were married in St. Helen’s, Lancashire on Oct 29th 1873. They are my great grandparents. In 1879, the marriage of Arthur Maddock and Eliza Birtles broke up.
The Census of the Isle of Man of 1881:
|
After his wife Eliza (Birtles) Maddock left to return to the Isle of Man Arthur married Rachel Jane Sagg (bigamously) in Liverpool in 1886. He died, aged 42, from excessive drinking.

- Elinore (also Ellie) Maddock (b.1859)
is listed in the 1881 census in the Isle of Man with her
sisters Anna and Harriet. She does not appear to have married. In
the 1901 census Elinore (her name is given as "Ellie") with
her sister Harriett (Bridie) are listed as cousins of Eliza B. Daly,
head of the household. Elinore is mentioned in newspaper records
in the Isle of Man in 1903 (Sole executrix of the will of Mrs. Eliza
Butler Daley). She is registered as signing a deed in 1909 so was still
alive at that date.
- William Hayes Maddock (b. 1860) He was born at 63 Heytesbury St, Dublin. No further record. Presumed to have died as an infant.
- Edward Bailey Bernard Stackpool Odell
Maddock (b.1861) Oct 29th 1861. (In the Parish Register only the names Edward
Stackpoole Odell are shown). He was born at 63 Heytesbury St, Dublin.
His marriage certificate gave all his names. In
the 1901 census of Ireland Edward is with his parents. Edward was
a merchant and owned a stationary shop in Douglas.
Several other articles about the case appear in Isle of Man publications.
- Anna Olivia "Posie" Maddock (b.1863), In the 1881 census she was living with two sisters, Elinore and Harriet, on Balladhou Rd. (listed as “head of household”. Presumably her parents were away in Ireland, at the time of the census). Anna married John Kelly on 17th Aug.,1898. Announcement in the Weekly Telegraph, Sept. 24th 1898.
- Charlotte Masaroon Morgan Maddock (b.1866, 10 July, in Tandragee, Co. Armagh), died aged 7 in Isle of Man in 1873 Buried 26th Feb 1873.
- Henry Henderson Gayer Maddock (b.1867,
12 Oct.) Henry was a Sergeant in the South African Light
Horse with General Buller, during the Boer War. He was injured and
taken prisoner 6 Jun 1900 in Nooitgedacht "Maddock, Sergeant, Prisoner
-
released at Nooitgedacht. 6 Jun 1900. (Source: Natal Field Force
Casualty Roll, page 231 line 11). In 1901 he is in Tandragee, Co Armagh,
N. Ireland, with his parents. His occupation is "prospector". He is
mentioned, in his father's will, as being in South Africa in 1903.
In 1907 Henry was on board the steam ship Briton from Cape Town, South
Africa which arrived in Southampton on 27th Jul 1907.
He gave his occupation as “Accountant”. He died on the
Isle of Man, aged 37. He was buried in Onchan on the 29th Jan 1908. His obituary provides details of his life.
- Harriet Hamilton Trail Maddock (b.1870,
12 April) listed in the 1881 census with her sisters Anna and Elinore.
In the 1901 census she and her sister Elinore are visiting Eliza B.
Daly, in the census her name is given as "Bridie" and they are
described as cousins of Eliza Daly.
Although Harriett was not mentioned in her father's will of 1904 it was
later
determined in court that her deceased sister Charlotte Elizabeth had
been inadvertently named in her stead.
- Mona Maud Mary Maddock
(b.1873) - still living at home with her parents in the Isle of Man in
1891, aged 18. She was also living with her parents in 1901 in Tandragee,
Co. Armagh. Mentioned in her father's will in 1904 and in subsequent court documents in 1906 as well as newspaper articles .
- Standish O’Grady Joseph Ira Dwight Knaggs
Maddock
(b 1875, 9 Jul). He was christened in the Isle of Man on the 24th April
1890. Standish served in the Boer War. In the 1901 Isle of
Man census Standish is visiting his sister, Anna Kelly. The next
recorded activity shows him emigrating to South Africa in 1903 on the
SS Persic, embarking at Cape Town. He is mentioned, in his father's
will, as being in South Africa in 1903. He was 28 years old and listed
his
occupation as a farmer.
He married Mary Elizabeth Brunton in Johannesburg 1929. She was 19
years younger than he was and was born in N. Dublin, Ireland. Standish
and Mary had two daughters: Mary O’Grady Maddock (married Dennis John Clare)
and Mona O’Grady Maddock (married David Errol Halse).
Standish Maddock died in 1945 aged 69.
In 1881 Elinore (also Ellie), Harriett (Bridie) and Anna Maddock were listed in the census of the Isle of Man with her sisters Anna and Harriet.
In the 1891 census Elinore is visiting Eliza B. Daly, a widow, in Conchan, Isle of Man.
In the 1901 census Elinor (Ellie) and her sister Harriet (Bridie) were listed as cousins of Eliza Daly.
Cousin relationship:
Eliza B. Daly was the daughter of John Abbott. She married Edward Daly in 1863 when she was nearly 40 years old. She and her husband are shown in the 1871 Isle of man census. Living with them are two of her sisters, Grace and Sarah Abbott.
Eliza Daly’s father was John Abbott born about 1790 in Ireland in King’s Co.. He had an older brother William Abbott born 1780 who was married in 1802 to Ann Smyth, daughter of Rev. John Smyth and Jane Bernard. Christopher Abbott and William Bernard were parties to the marriage settlement.(1) William Abbott died in 1828. Jane Bernard was the daughter of Thomas Bernard of Castletown, Offaly. William’s wife Anne was therefore a distant cousin of the Anna Frances (Bernard) Maddock.
The Abbots were also known to the Maddocks through another connection. Richard Bernard of Dublin married Jemima Lambert in 1804 (2). Jemima was the daughter of William Lambert and Mary Bernard of Carlow. Parties to the marriage settlement were William Bernard (probably Mary Bernard’s cousin) and Christopher Abbott. Richard is probably a descendant of a son of Franks Bernard and Elizabeth Jessop i.e Franks Bernard, born about 1764, Thomas Bernard, born about 1766 or Benjamin Bernard born about 1767.
