The will of James Wilson Birtles was made in 1860, he died in 1868
In the Name of God. Amen. I James
Wilson Birtles of the Town of Douglas Isle of Man being of sound and
disposing mind memory and understandings at the making and execution
hereof do make and publish this paper writing as and for my last will
and testament in manner following that is to say I leave devise and
bequeath unto my wife Mary Birtles the whole of my property and effects
both real and personal whatsoever and wheresoever the same may be and I
nominate constitute and appoint my said wife my sole executrix of this
my will hereby revoking and making void all and every will or wills by
me at any time heretofore made. In witness whereof I have hereunto
subscribed my name this twelfth day of December One Thousand Eight
Hundred and Sixty.
Signed published and declared by the
said testator as his will in his presence who at his request in his
presence and in the presence of each other have hereunto subscribed our
names as witnesses. Signed by James Wilson Birtles. Names of witnesses:

At the Ecclesiastical Court held
at Douglas on the 7th day April 1868 James Cain one of the subscribing
witnesses to the foregoing paper writing purporting to be the last will
and testament of James Wilson Birtles late of the town of Douglas in
the Isle of Man Innkeeper deceased having made oath upon the Holy
Evangelist that said James Wilson Birtles the testator when of sound
and disposing mind memory and understanding duly signed and executed
the same as and for his last will and testament in his presence and in
the presence of Randle Gorvin Dean the other subscribing witness
thereto. Mary Birtles Widow the relict of the said deceased the
sole executrix named therein is therefore sworn to well and truly
fulfill and execute said will and administer all and singular the
personal and effects of the said deceased according to law by paying
the just debts and funeral expenses of the deceased and the legacies
contained in his will so far forth as the same estate and effects
will thereto extend and the law bind her and return into the
Archdeacon’s Registry of said Isle a full true and perfect inventory of
all and singular the said estate and effects with an accurate account
of her administration thereof when thereunto lawfully required
and by these ends she hath given pledges Lewis Phillip Kewly Kewley of
Ballavere and William Mather of the Town of Douglas both in the Parish
of Braddan who have entered into and executed the usual bond in
the presence of the Court.
