Descendants of John Price

John and Esther (Smith) Price

In his genealogy of the Smith families (NYBG Record, Vol. 85, 1954), Samuel Stelle Smith provided the only information found so far on Esther Smith, daughter of Hezekiah (4) Smith.  It is not known whether she was a daughter by his first wife Mary (-) or his second wife Sarah (-).  According to a Bible owned by a Smith descendant, Esther was born 16 Jan 1746, and died 9 May 1799.

In an unrecorded will written 7 Jan 1782, Hezekiah Smith gave a bequest to daughter Esther Price which consisted of “..one-1/6 part of my land and mortgages and investments and salt meadows while she continues to be the widow of John Price.”  On 22 Jun 1799, Hezekiah made another will which was recorded and in which Esther was not mentioned.

To date, no record of her marriage to John Price has been found.  There also is very little known about him.  He was born in Glastonbury, CT, 16 Jun 1739, the son of Samuel 2 (Robert 1) Price and Sarah Perrin who migrated from Connecticut to Sussex Co., NJ, perhaps as early as 1741.  John died before 7 Jan 1782.  In the “History of Sussex County, New Jersey”, compiled by James P. Snell, it is related that John returned to Connecticut, and eventually to seafaring.  It is not known if this is an accurate account.  A Captain John Price, Stepney, CT, was master of the ‘Sea Flower’ to North Carolina as early as 1772, but further information has not been found to confirm that he was the same person.

Hezekiah Price

The only known child of John and Esther (Smith) Price was Hezekiah Price.  Some genealogists place the year of his birth as 1761.  On 23 Sep 1782, he married Nancy/ Anne Hopkins in Frankford Twp., Sussex Co., NJ.  The ceremony was conducted by his uncle, Squire Francis Price, J.P.  The parents of Nancy Hopkins are not known.

In 1786, Hezekiah was an Inn holder in Somerset Co., NJ, and was listed on the tax rolls for Bridgewater Twp., 1785-1787, and 1792-1794.  He was a witness to the will of Peter Staats of Bridgewater Twp., on 12 Oct 1793; and he and his wife Anne signed a mortgage in Somerset Co., on 31 Mar 1794.

By 1796, Hezekiah was in Hamilton Co., OH.  The birthplaces of his children indicate his family was still in New Jersey as late as March 1796, but they were in Hamilton Co., before February 1798.  On 3 Jul 1797, he was appointed administrator of the estate of William Harris in Hamilton Co., and on 21 Jan 1799, at the Miami (OH) Land Office, he witnessed a deed from John Cleves Symmes to Mary Sebring, daughter of William Harris and the wife of Abraham Sebring, Jr.  That same year, his grandfather Hezekiah Smith bequeathed to him the proceeds from the sale of a house and lot in Bridgewater Twp., Somerset Co., NJ.

Active in civic affairs, Hezekiah participated in the first election held in Columbia Twp., Hamilton Co., OH, in 1803.  He served in the first Ohio State Legislature as a member of the House from 1804 to 1806 and as a Senator from 1806 to 1810.  He was mentioned in 1807 and 1810 in the Western Spy and Hamilton Gazette in accounts of meetings of the Republican Corresponding Society of Hamilton County and was likely a member of the organization.  He was a Justice of the Peace in Sycamore Twp., as early as 1812, continuing in this capacity at least as late as 1821.

At the 8 April1818 Hamilton County Court of Common Pleas, Hezekiah and his son William R. Price proved the will of David Little. At the same session, Hezekiah provided security for the estate of Joshua Ward whose widow was Jane Ward.  At the 15 September Court, he provided security  with Aaron Boram for the estate of Job Stratton and was appointed an administrator of the estate of Levi Heath.  At a session held 5 Apr 1819, he was appointed an administrator of the estate of John Carlin and his son Clarkson Price was one of those who provided security.  By 25 Dec 1820, Jane Ward of Indiana, widow of Joshua, was deceased.  Her will was filed 6 Jan 1821, with executor Hezekiah Price.  The Price children were witnesses to her will.  In 1825, Hezekiah appraised the real estate of William Mitchell, deceased.   On 27 Nov 1829, he and John Snider were appointed administrators of the estate of David Felter.

Hezekiah Price died between 1 Apr 1830 and 5 Jun 1830.  At a Special Court, 5 Jun 1830, William R. Price was appointed administrator of his estate.  Bond was set at $1400, with security provided by Martin Ryan and Dominicus King.  The appraisers of the estate were John Short, Richard Botkin and Jacob Felter.  Hezekiah signed his will 1 Apr 1830 and it was filed in Hamilton Co., 10 Aug 1830, naming his wife Anne; eldest son Clarkson; second son Peter; third and youngest son William R; eldest daughter Hannah Crain; second daughter Susannah Radabaugh; third daughter Esther Ryan; fourth and youngest daughter Katherine S. Price.  He bequeathed to son William, a house and lot in Mechanicsburgh, Butler Co., OH, being lot #4 of the original plot of said town, and William was to execute the will.  Witnesses were Robert and Richard Botkin.

It is not known when Nancy/Anne (Hopkins) Price died, and it is believed she and Hezekiah, some of their children, and other family members were buried in a cemetery on his farm in Montgomery, Hamilton Co., OH.  This became the Radabaugh farm in 1835.  Many years later, the cemetery was demolished and it is not known if the bodies were interred elsewhere.
